Verse 5 - Straw Dogs

The creative response to this chapter is Straw Dog - an effigy of the ceremonial straw dogs referenced in the verse that would be revered for the duration of a traditional ceremony and then discarded.

Straw Dog is constructed from shredded screenshots of notices I received reporting the deletion of several of my social media posts on WeChat and the Chinese version of TikTok. 

The first instances were the deletion of social media posts advertising my project and exhibition BitMing, presumably for containing the word ‘cryptocurrency’. Later, the live streaming of performance work A Line Made By Kneeling, was terminated, which violated the rules due to my being a “non-Chinese Mainland host”.

The binary indifference of algorithmic censorship is one where nuance and humanity are regarded as the straw dogs. But as the bellows are emptied, the fire is fed. The very act of censorship simply highlights the bias and agenda of a system.


第五章——刍狗

天地的客观性通常与人类造成的世界有反差。

在第五章中提到的刍狗是祭祀中使用的草编织的狗,在祭祀结束后,刍狗会被扔掉的。

这次的艺术感应叫做《刍狗》,原材料是我在微信和抖音上发布的帖子被删除的通知截图。该通知被碎纸机撕碎、编织成刍狗模样的作品。

被和谐的帖子首例是关于我的《比特冥》项目和展览,想必是因为帖子包含“加密货币”之类的语词。之后,行为作品《跪出的线》的创作直播也被终止,理由是我是非中国大陆的主持人。

以冷漠的二元算法来进行和谐是把人性和细微差别当作刍狗。

可是橐龠越虚,火越烈。网禁本身则透露着某个制度的偏见。
