Year of the Rat Masks
Year of the Rat Masks is an exhibition that documents new work by Daniel Staincliffe made throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the space of a few short months, the face mask has become ubiquitous around the world, acting as the point of convergence for debates around epidemiology, pandemic readiness and even diplomatic relations.
The artist took the face mask as a symbol of the virus’ impact and created new works inspired by specific points in the outbreak, starting with the spread of the virus over Spring Festival.
Release—An investigation into compassion
Release is an exhibition of recent works on paper and video installation by British artist Daniel Staincliffe. The project is inspired by the Buddhist practice of ‘life release’, where the artist buys animals intended for human consumption and releases them into the wild. The animal’s movements at the moment of release are captured using the physical medium of ink on paper. The exhibition aims to explore the role compassion plays in the quotidian decisions we make regarding consumption.
Exhibition: Fauna Automata: British Wild Boar
In the summer of 2011, Daniel Staincliffe was artist in residence in the Forest of Dean, UK, researching the newly re-introduced population of wild boar. The project’s main body of work were wooden mechanical sculptures, housing disposable cameras, that allowed these elusive creatures to be documented and revealed.
This exhibition, presented for the first time outside of the UK, presents a selection of the 38 grainy, dramatic and often comical portraits of the forest's largest animals.
